Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if this is pattern hair loss and not something else?
Pattern hair loss is gradual thinning at the temples, crown, or part line without redness or scaling. Round or oval patches with a sharp, defined edge point toward alopecia areata instead, which needs its own assessment.
How long before I see results from minoxidil or finasteride?
Both need at least 3 to 6 months of consistent use before you can judge whether they're working — and minoxidil can actually cause more shedding at first before things improve. Baseline photos make it much easier to track real change over time.
Can women use finasteride?
No — finasteride and dutasteride aren't appropriate for women of childbearing potential because of the risk to a male fetus. Spironolactone is the off-label oral option considered for women instead.
What happens if I stop treatment?
The benefits aren't permanent. Minoxidil's effects fade within months of stopping, so it needs to be continued indefinitely to keep the results you've gained.
My shedding is sudden and all over, not gradual thinning in one spot — is that the same thing?
