Frequently Asked Questions
Is a topical gel really as good as a pill for joint pain?
For knee or hand OA, topical diclofenac gel is actually first-line, especially if you're 75 or older or at higher risk from oral NSAIDs — though it doesn't work for hip OA, since that joint sits too deep for the gel to reach.
Which should I use — an anti-inflammatory like naproxen, or acetaminophen?
Oral NSAIDs like naproxen generally control OA pain better than acetaminophen, but acetaminophen is a reasonable choice if you want to avoid NSAID risks to your stomach, kidneys, or heart, or can't take them safely.
I have heart disease — can I still take an anti-inflammatory?
Certain NSAIDs, like celecoxib, should be avoided with ischemic heart disease, a prior stroke, or heart failure. This is exactly the kind of history a pharmacist reviews before recommending which oral option, if any, is safest for you.
Would a cortisone injection help?
