How soon after unprotected sex do I need to take this?
All the oral options are approved for use up to 120 hours (5 days) after, but levonorgestrel works best within the first 24 hours and gets less effective the longer you wait — so don't delay if you can avoid it.
What's the difference between levonorgestrel (Plan B) and ulipristal acetate?
Ulipristal acetate is more effective than levonorgestrel overall, especially between 72 and 120 hours after and in people at a higher body weight, but it needs a prescription. If you take it, you'll need to wait 5 days before starting hormonal birth control.
Can the copper IUD really work as emergency contraception?
Yes — it's actually the most effective EC option of all, and it's the only one that also becomes your ongoing contraception afterward, lasting up to 10 years if you want to keep it in.
Does emergency contraception protect against STIs?
